Teething: The Signs to Watch For

Posted .

Did you know your child could start teething at any time? Well, it’s true! A child can start teething at 10 weeks old to four months old, which makes it difficult to recognize the teething phase. So, to help you, our Minorca Smiles team is happy to tell you all about the teething signs to look for. Those signs are:

-Drooling: One of the most common symptoms of teething is drooling. You won’t believe how much one child can drool. This will make their shirts constantly soggy. To help prevent drenched outfits, fasten a bib around their neck and gently wipe the drool away from their chin throughout the day.

-Biting: The pressure from the erupting teeth may cause a lot of discomfort, but it can be relieved by counter pressure, which can involve biting. Your child will bite on anything they can get their hands on.

-Crying: Some babies get through their teething phase easily while others don’t. It’s common for your child to be extremely fussy by whining and crying throughout the day. The first teeth usually hurt the most. Your child will get used to the feeling later on down the road.

-Refusal to feed: Oftentimes the suction involved in eating makes your child’s gums feel worse, which can result in your child refusing to eat. Your child might also refuse to eat more solid foods. This is common, but keep at it. It should get better within a couple days.

-Interrupted sleep: The discomfort from the teething will often wake your baby up at night. When this happens, see if your child can settle back to sleep. If they can’t, soothe them by patting their back or by singing a lullaby. Try not to resort to feeding.

If your child is experiencing these symptoms, there is a high chance their teeth will start to emerge from their gums.
